We had a call in August from Cat Barlow from the South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project Team. She told us that in June her team came across to Colonsay and collected a golden eagle chick from a nest of twins. This was done under licence and with full permission and support of land owners and raptor worker David Jardine who monitors the nest. The chick was translocated down to Southern Scotland and released as part of a conservation effort to boost numbers in Southern Scotland.
The golden eagle chick (now full grown) is a female, big strong and beautiful. They suggested asking pupils and staff of our school to name the eagle chick and we decided on the name Paradise. We thought of the different places on Colonsay that she could be named after, and then someone shouted “Pig’s Paradise” which is where the sea birds nest. As Pig’s Paradise does not seem particularly apt for a golden eagle, it was shortened to Paradise.
Cat has promised to keep in touch to update us on how Paradise is getting on.
